5 Symptoms And Causes Of Kidney Cancer

Kidneys are essential for the healthy functioning of the human body. They help detoxify the blood, filter out waste in the form of urine, balance vital fluids, maintain electrolyte levels, and regulate blood pressure. They also make red blood cells and ensure strong bones. In the course of a lifetime, sometimes, kidneys unexpectedly develop masses or tumors inside them. Such abnormal growths may or may not be cancerous. Whether a kidney mass is benign or malignant can depend on its size. Smaller kidney masses are more likely to be non-cancerous, whereas larger ones might be cancerous. In either situation, it’s best to seek guidance from a trained professional.

There are three types of kidney tumors:

    Renal Cell Carcinomas

Renal cell carcinomas are found in the central part of the kidney, where filtration occurs. These are the most common types of malignant tumors.

    Benign Kidney Tumors

Benign kidney tumors are generally non-cancerous. However, some do have the potential to become large and cancerous.

    Wilms Tumors

Wilms tumors are generally found in children’s kidneys.

What Are The Causes Of Kidney Cancer?

It is difficult to pinpoint one common cause of kidney cancer. However, several factors can increase the risk of getting kidney cancer. Here are some of them:

Smoking: Chain smokers are at a higher risk of getting kidney cancer.

Diet: Obesity and a diet lacking adequate nutrition can also lead to kidney cancer.

Genes: Sometimes, people are genetically predisposed to getting kidney cancer due to family history.

Exposure To Harmful Chemicals: Continuous exposure to chlorinated chemicals can also increase one’s risk of developing kidney tumors.

Kidney Dialysis: People on kidney dialysis are likely to develop abnormal growths. What Are The Symptoms Of Kidney Cancer?

It’s difficult to detect a kidney mass in its early stages. However, there are some symptoms that one can look out for:

Appetite: If there is a sudden loss in one’s appetite, it’s best to get checked.

Weight Loss: Sudden unintentional weight loss could be a symptom of kidney cancer.

Bloody Urine: If one spots any blood in their urine, it might be a cause for concern.

Pain: If one experiences pain between their ribs and hips, consider going to the doctor for a checkup.

Lower Back Pain: If one experiences prolonged lower back pain on one side, it could be a symptom of kidney cancer.
