Conventional wisdom, as well as the mattress manufacturing industry, says a mattress should be replaced at least every eight to ten years. But the decision is not so simple. Often, organizations serving the mattress industry will suggest you replace mattresses rather often, but studies have shown that some good quality mattresses can last up to 15 years or even more.
Innerspring Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses are constructed with steel coil springs inside the mattress itself, often with layers made of various foams and fibers over it. There are a number of variations of innerspring mattresses, that are defined according to what kind of topper materials are used, like pillow-top, memory foam, ventilated foam, and temperature-regulating gels.
These mattresses last from seven to ten years, sometimes lasting longer.
Memory Foam Mattresses
These mattresses use a polyurethane foam that can shape itself to conform to a person’s body, and then returns to its uncompressed state when the sleeper rises. This mattress will conform to anyone’s body, thus allowing side-by-side sleepers to each have their own comfort experience.
A good memory foam mattress should last you ten to fifteen years, sometimes longer.
Gel Memory Foam
These are a memory foam variation of the mattress in which gel beads or swirls are used in the memory foam material, which lets it redistribute heat better and keeps the sleeper cooler. Like memory foam, these mattresses may last from ten to fifteen years, or even longer if it is of the very best quality. These mattresses benefit from being rotated on the bed frame periodically, head to foot.
Latex
Latex mattresses are made of natural or synthetic latex foam and are thought of as one of the more durable mattresses, especially when they’re made from natural latex with very dense foam construction. These mattresses have a lifespan of fifteen years but some users find latex mattresses too hard to be comfortable.
Hybrid Mattresses
A typical hybrid mattress is made using layers of memory foam that are placed over a series of innerspring coils, and this is a combination that many users find to be the most comfortable of all. While some hybrids use standard memory foam, some also include gel which makes the mattress cooler to sleep on.
A good hybrid mattress has a good ten years in it, with some lasting even longer.
