Many conversations abound about fashion over 50, including a few controversial pieces of advice being shared, which makes one ask, what’s the secret to dressing well when you’re over 50? Here are some of our tips:
No More Old-Fashioned Skirts
If you’re looking to wear an old-fashioned skirt, the trick is to know how to style them. Wearing them with brogues and flesh-colored tights age you considerably, whereas choosing a comfy pair of boots or tennis shoes instantly gives you a fresher look. Style it with a plain but well-cut t-shirt or shirt, making sure you tuck it in at the waistband.
Skip the Fleeces
For some women over 50, certain styles like those cozy fleece jackets might make you want to re-evaluate your wardrobe choices.
Choose a nice slouchy cardigan instead, preferably longline, or with a more structured look for smarter occasions.
For coats, choose neutral colors with a slightly nipped-in waist and a longer length.
Avoid Elastic Waistbands
Though elastic waistlines have a bad rep, they’re still comfy and we see no reason to outlaw them. Instead, hiding the waistline of your trousers or skirt is an easy alternative. Try tucking your top in and then pulling out just enough to cover the band. Alternatively, you can ditch the jogging bottoms and choose a pair of comfortable loose tie-waist trousers.
Avoid Loud Makeup
We aren’t sure that blue eyeshadow and orange lipstick works at any age. We suggest steering clear of bright shades that don’t complement one another. Instead, muted tones, fresh pink hues, and a dewy look work best, regardless of your age.
The Perfect Denim Skirt
A favorite in the ’80s, denim skirts aren’t always a flattering choice when it comes to fashion over 50. Certain skirts can also be clingy and uncomfortable, depending on how tight they are. Recently, however, the denim skirt has been having its moment again in updated forms. There are a number of casual-but-cool offerings out there that won’t feel or look like a death grip.
